Weight Management
Bariatric surgery is the art and science of managing Obesity and its medical complications, in a more definitive and longer lasting way than all conventional non-invasive methods.
The heavy cloud of Obesity has spread across the globe and especially in our region of the Gulf. This chronic and relapsing disease carries with it the heavy rain of medical problems relating to all the body organs (Heart, lung, liver, kidney, ovaries, spine. Etc).
The global awareness of the disease has driven surgery up to be recommended to all types of Obese patients, while following structured pathways that take in consideration, the patient’s weight, fitness, presence of medical metabolic complications (e.g Diabetes, Hypertension. Etc), and presence of any long term follow up to ensure good outcomes.
While all medical means to tackle obesity consolidate and support each other, however, only surgery remains, through international scientific consensus, as the most enduring approach for achieving a healthy body weight and hence the desired metabolic balance in the long term.
The early and long-term benefits of surgery in the right candidate far outweigh the risks of metabolic diseases (Diabetes, Hypertension, atherosclerosis) and the damage on multiple organs caused by long standing Insulin resistance in the body.
Here at Burjeel Medical City, the Bariatric and Metabolic surgery department offers the full spectrum of surgical services leading not only to weight loss but also through its Metabolic effects, dealing directly with the consequences of pathological weight increase by helping to improve on or reverse the damage arising from insulin resistance. The best results from these procedures could only be obtained if the disease is tackled early in its course (e.g operations on Diabetics within 5 years of their diagnosis).
Our team consists of highly experienced surgeons specialised in this field of surgery. They are assisted by a full skeleton of experts in Anaesthesia and intensive care, Nursing, Allied health and other staff, inside a modern and technically advanced operating theatre with facilities for complex and advanced procedures.
Among the operations done at our centre are:
