Biography

Dr. Ahmed Al-Sharefi worked as a consultant in internal medicine, endocrinology, and diabetes at South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust (UK) and served as an honorary consultant in reproductive endocrinology at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, North East England. After completing his M.B.Ch.B. with distinction in Baghdad, he pursued further clinical training in the United Kingdom. He successfully completed the residency program in England and obtained the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in endocrinology, diabetes, and general internal medicine in 2021. He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (MRCP-Edinburgh) and was awarded the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of London (FRCP-London). Throughout his career, he has gained invaluable clinical experience working in various NHS hospitals in the UK, including a research placement at Imperial College London and Hammersmith Hospital in 2019. He has published numerous scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals, including a book chapter on diabetes and lipids published by Oxford University Press. He has also presented his work at several national and international conferences. Dr. Ahmed contributes to the development of national diabetes guidelines as a member of the Joint British Diabetes Society for Inpatient Care Group (JBDS-IP). Moreover, his outstanding achievements have been recognized through various awards, including the Undergraduate Top 10 Students Award, the Kelly-Young Regional Prize, Best Oral Presentation Prize 2016, and the Best Poster Prize at the Obesity Update Conference 2017. Aside from his clinical and research endeavors, Dr. Al-Sharefi is an examiner for the Royal College MRCP PACES exam and is regularly involved in teaching endocrinology courses on a national level, demonstrating his commitment to the education and mentorship of future physicians. Dr. Al-Sharefi A has contributed to numerous endocrinology conferences and journals, including presenting on “The Endocrine Trifecta: Rare Presentation of a Rare Disease” at The ECE 2016, “Hyperinsulinemic Hypoglycemia Post-Bariatric Surgery: Is It More Common Than Anticipated?” at Obesity Updates 2017, and “Prevalence of Primary Hypogonadism Among Male Medical Inpatients with Unexplained Anemia” at the International Congress of Endocrinology 2018. He has also been involved in research on “Undiagnosed Primary Hyperparathyroidism in Pregnancy Resulting in Hypercalcemic Crisis and Uremic Encephalopathy” at AACE Gulf Chapter 2017, and “MDFiNE (Monogenic Diabetes Finder-North East): Pilot of a Novel Digital Search Tool to Enhance Diagnostic Rates for Monogenic Diabetes” at the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) 2024.
