Biography

Dr. Fatma Alshamsi is a pioneering Emirati physician at the forefront of gastroenterology and a distinguished Consultant Gastroenterologist trained in Canada. As the first Emirati specializing in inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, she graduated from the prestigious University of Ottawa, bringing unmatched expertise and a groundbreaking approach to patient care. Dr. Alshamsi has further honed her skills in interventional endoscopy, earning the distinction of being the first female physician to participate in the University of Ottawa’s Advanced Interventional Endoscopy Fellowship Program. She then continued her education at McGill University, where she became the first female Emirati physician to specialize in advanced ERCP, diagnostic and therapeutic cholangioscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). Her exceptional training enables her to perform complex procedures such as cancer staging, needle aspiration and biopsies, internal drainage, nerve blocks and neurolysis, coiling, EUS-guided portal pressure gradient (PPG) measurements, and fiducial placement for gastrointestinal malignancies, among others. Dr. Alshamsi continues to set new milestones in healthcare innovation and excellence. With over 10 years of experience, she is passionate about improving healthcare outcomes and advancing medical education. Her special interests include inflammatory bowel diseases, pancreaticobiliary diseases, and advanced interventional endoscopy, among others.
