Biography

Dr. Ali Abdul Razzaq Mahmood Al-Mafrachi is a board-certified pediatric ophthalmologist and strabismus surgeon practicing in the UAE, with over 15 years of experience. He holds prestigious international qualifications, including FRCS (Glasgow) and advanced training from ESASO, Switzerland. Dr. Al-Mafrachi is recognized for pioneering pediatric eye care programs in Iraq, including the first ROP screening initiative and retinoblastoma treatment program. He is actively involved in medical education and serves as a Board Member of the World Society of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WSPOS). 

Awards & Achievements

  • Founded and pioneered the first national Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) screening and treatment program in Iraq (2014).
  • Established and led the first dedicated Retinoblastoma treatment program in Iraq (2018).
  • Served as Head of the Pediatric Ophthalmology Department at Ibn Al-Haitham Teaching Eye Hospital, Baghdad (2019–2022).
  • Served as Head of the Minor Surgeries Department at Ibn Al-Haitham Teaching Eye Hospital (2020–2022).
  • Led the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Department at Ibn Al-Haitham Teaching Eye Hospital (2012–2016).
  • Appointed Arab Board Training Center Manager and contributed to the training of ophthalmology residents and fellows across the region.
  • Served as Arab Board examiner, supervisor, and trainer in multiple international final oral and clinical examinations.
  • Achieved Board Membership of the World Society of Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (WSPOS), reflecting international recognition in the field.
  • Delivered invited lectures and scientific presentations at major regional and international ophthalmology conferences in the UAE, Lebanon, Malaysia, Jordan, Egypt, and Iraq.
  • Contributed to the advancement of pediatric ophthalmology through published research, educational activities, and subspecialty surgical training.
