Dr. Fatma Alshamsi is a trailblazing Emirati physician and esteemed Consultant Gastroenterologist with advanced training in Canada. As the first Emirati to specialize in inflammatory bowel diseases, including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, Dr. Alshamsi graduated from the renowned University of Ottawa, where she cultivated her expertise and introduced a groundbreaking approach to patient care. She further advanced her skills in interventional endoscopy, becoming the first female physician to join the University of Ottawa’s Advanced Interventional Endoscopy Fellowship Program. Dr. Alshamsi then trained at McGill University, where she achieved another milestone as the first female Emirati physician to specialize in advanced ERCP, diagnostic and therapeutic cholangioscopy, and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS). Her training allows her to perform complex procedures such as cancer staging, needle aspiration and biopsies, internal drainage, nerve blocks and neurolysis, coiling, EUS-guided portal pressure gradient (PPG) measurements, and fiducial placement for gastrointestinal malignancies.
