Fetal Medicine at the Kypros Nicolaides

The Kypros Nicolaides Fetal Medicine and Therapy Center at Burjeel Medical City provides comprehensive care for babies in the womb (fetus) and mothers. The unit is led by a team of consultants and specialist doctors who offer diagnosis, monitoring, and both medical and surgical treatment for fetal abnormalities and growth disorders.

The center also has a dedicated high-risk pregnancy and multiple pregnancy clinic to take care of maternal and fetal complications that may arise. Pregnant women are often referred to our unit for routine scans if an abnormality is suspected or if there is any concern with the well-being of the fetus.

Cervical Length Scan

Assessing the length of the cervix during pregnancy is called cervical length screening. It is important because it can help assess the length of the cervix during pregnancy. A shorter cervix may indicate an increased risk of preterm birth, making this screening crucial for identifying high-risk pregnancies.

Viability Scan

The viability scan is a pregnancy scan that is usually carried out at 7-10 weeks of pregnancy. This is the first scan performed during the pregnancy and is sometimes also called the dating scan. The viability scan is usually performed through your abdomen but sometimes a transvaginal scan is required.

Dating Scan

A dating scan is done in the first trimester of pregnancy, usually between the 11th and 14th week. It is an ultrasound scan that measures the length of the fetus. It can help confirm whether you are pregnant with one baby or multiple babies and the pregnancy is not ectopic, a condition where the baby grows outside the uterus.

Nuchal Scan

A type of ultrasound scan that is performed from 11 weeks + 3 days to 13 weeks + 6 days. The scan is usually carried out transabdominally but in a few cases, it may be necessary to do the examination transvaginally. This is one of the most important scans during pregnancy and is recommended for all women.

Mini Anomaly Scan

This procedure is designed to provide essential information about the baby’s health and development with a focus on identifying major structural abnormalities. It is often performed when a full anomaly scan is not feasible or when a quick follow-up is needed after an initial comprehensive scan.

Anomaly Scan

It takes a close look at your baby and your womb (uterus) at about 20 weeks of pregnancy. The anomaly scan is performed between 20-24 weeks of gestation. During the scan we examine each part of the fetal body, determine the position of the placenta, assess the amount of amniotic fluid, and measure fetal growth.
