What Is the Wellbeing Scan?

An important pregnancy scan, usually carried out at 7-10 weeks (about 2 and a half months) of pregnancy. This is the first scan performed during the pregnancy and is sometimes also called the dating scan.

When Can I Have the Wellbeing Scan?

The Wellbeing scan or Growth Scan is usually performed around 36 weeks of pregnancy. However, in case of a high-risk pregnancy, it can be performed from 28 weeks up to the term and the frequency of scans is would depend on maternal and fetal concerns.

Why Should I Have a Wellbeing Scan?

All women should have this scan to see if the baby is growing at a normal rate with no complications.

What Does the Wellbeing Scan Check For?

This scan aims to determine the growth and health of the baby by:

  • Measurement of the size of the fetal Head Circumference (HC), Abdomen Circumference (AC), and Femur Length (FL)
  • The HC, AC, and FL measurements are then used to calculate an Estimated Fetal Weight (EFW). This is best predicted from 28 weeks onwards
  • Assessment of the movements of the baby
  • Measurement of the amount of amniotic fluid
  • Evaluation of the placental position and appearance
  • Assessment of blood flow to the placenta and baby by Color Doppler ultrasound

What Is the Next Step I Should Have After the Wellbeing Scan?

Further wellbeing scans can be performed anytime for reassurance or if concerns remain. When serial Wellbeing scans are recommended, they should be performed at the time intervals recommended by the doctor. Usually, this time interval is 2-4 weeks.
